All routines must stay within their time limits, including entrances and exits. A $25 fee will be charged for any routine that exceeds these time limits.

Routine Styles

ACRO

A blend of classical dance technique with acrobatic elements such as tumbling, balancing, contortion, and strength-based skills.


BALLET: CLASSICAL

A highly technical and classical form of dance done on demi-point that focuses on precise movement and strength using a structured vocabulary of steps, turnout, and refined lines.


BALLET: CHARACTER

A style of ballet that tells a story with characters and themes, or expressions of cultural folk traditions.

BALLET: POINTE

A style of ballet where dancers are en pointe.


BALLET: VARIATIONS

A short solo piece taken from a full-length classical ballet that reflects the character, style, and story of the original work. Variations can only be performed by soloists.


CONTEMPORARY

A modern style of dance that blends techniques from ballet and modern jazz while incorporating expressive and fluid-like movements in an experimental way.

HIP HOP

A high-energy, street-style of dance that includes movements of popping, locking, breaking, freestyle, etc. 



IMPROVISATION

Dancers will be given a piece of music to dance to for 45 seconds. They must match their improvised movements to the style of song they are given. Dancers will be shown their music selection right before they go on stage to perform. Improvisation can be done as a solo or a duet.

JAZZ

A lively and energetic style of dance that combines sharp, precise movements while demonstrating strength, flexibility, and showmanship.


LYRICAL

A classical style of dance that combines the technique of ballet and the expression of jazz to convey emotion with movements connected to the song’s lyrics and mood.

MUSICAL THEATRE

A character-driven style that combines various dance styles with dramatic elements of storytelling and lip syncing.


OPEN

A routine that does not traditionally fit into any of the other categories. Tap, Variations, and Pointe routines cannot be entered into the Open category.

SONG & DANCE

A performance style that combines singing and dancing together. Singing must be live; lip-syncing or pre-recorded voiceovers are not allowed. Microphones or headsets must be provided by the studio. 

 

STUDENT CHOREOGRAPHY

A piece where the choreography is created entirely by the dancer. It must highlight creativity, personal expression, and originality. Teachers and choreographers are not allowed to work with dancers to create the choreography. Student Choreography can only be performed by soloists.


TAP

A classic style of dance which focuses on rhythm, musicality, and sound. All dancers in a tap routine must wear tap shoes. Pre-recorded sounds are not allowed.


INSPIRING ARTISTS

Dancers with physical or cognitive disabilities are encouraged to particiapte. We are proud to welcome dancers of all abilities and we will provide any accommodations needed to create a supportive and inclusive performance experience.


*Acro tricks are allowed in all genres of dance, however, they must add to the artistry of the routine and must make sense choreographically. No more than 4 acro tricks are allowed in any routine that is not in the acro category.
